Measuring pH in shampoo

Shampoo is a hair care product used for removal of dirt, dandruff, skin particles, oils and other contaminated particles.

As the scientists behind hair care progressed, manufacturers synthesized chemical additives for use in shampoo as fragrance, foaming agents, and colored dyes. Shampoo is now created and structured towards various hair types, as well as to achieve a certain end result, such as the reduction of dandruff or greasy hair. Both the synthetic and natural ingredients used in a shampoo dictate the pH of that particular product. The pH of a shampoo will alter the natural pH of skin and hair, which ideally falls between pH 3 and 5 and pH 4 and 5, respectively, thereby affecting their physical and chemical makeup.

How to maintain your testers?

STORE SMALL AMOUNT OF pH BUFFER IN A SMALL JAR

The calibration of a pH electrode is only as good as the buffer. When calibrating a pH meter the buffer should never be poured back in the bottle. By doing this the bottle may become contaminated and buffer value no longer valid. By using a small clean jar it is possible to pour a small amount of buffer into it from the bottle. The solution in the jar is then used to calibrate the meter. This solution is then replaced periodically (i.e. once a week) with fresh buffer.

Note: Hanna also offers the HI 70007P (25 sachets of pH 7.01) and the HI 77400P (5 each of pH 7.01 and 4.01 sachets), which are convenient, single use buffers. They are always fresh at the time of opening.

ALWAYS USE A PROPER STORAGE SOLUTION TO KEEP THE pH ELECTRODE HYDRATED

A problem most users is what to use as a storage solution. That is, whether to store their electrode in tap water, or a storage solution. It is always best to use storage solution. If storage solution, such as the HI 70300L, is not available then use pH 4 buffer. If you have no pH 4 buffer then use pH 7 buffer. Never store in tap or purified water. Inside the electrode there is a solution high in salt. Tap water or purified water is very low in salt (relative to the solution inside the electrode). This imbalance will cause the water to move from low concentration (water) to high (inside electrode) by osmosis.
For example: When a plant is placed in a nutrient solution of a high concentration, the water from the plant moves into the salty solution. This movement of water will cause the plant to become brown or burn. The same can be said for the pH electrode. The water will want to move into the electrode. The other problem will be diffusion. In this case, the salt from a high concentration moves to a low concentration until there is equilibrium. Both will affect the concentration of salt inside the electrode, which will then affect the life of the pH electrode.

Note: It is okay to place electrode in water for a short period of time to rinse off a solution. Just do not store the electrode in it.

BY ALWAYS MAINTAINING A HYDRATED ELECTRODE THE CONDITION WILL ALWAYS REMAIN THE SAME

To do this either place the meter upright in a glass with storage solution or place a small piece of sponge (1/4” cube from a new kitchen sponge) in the cap of your tester and wet the sponge with the solution. The other benefit of placing the electrode in solution or storing properly is to keep the junction wet. There is the area of every pH electrode that salt (in liquid or gel) migrates from the inside the probe to the outside in the solution that is being tested. Anything that prevents this will cause readings to drift (not stable). Storing the probe with solution ensures that the junction is wet and will not form a precipitate at the outer surface.

CLEAN THE ELECTRODE PERIODICALLY

Preferably you will want to use a cleaning solution such as HI 7061M or, if not available, a couple of drops of dishwasher detergent into a glass of water. Using a soft toothbrush gently clean your electrode. By doing this you remove any growth on the sensor, which in turn will cause inaccurate readings. In most cases, you can calibrate the error out but eventually the growth will affect the readings regardless of calibrating.

Note: After cleaning the meter MUST be re-calibrated.

CRACK OR BREAK OF PROBE ON THE INSIDE, THE METER WILL ALWAYS READ 7

If this will happen, the meter will always read 7, regardless of the solution. If you are performing only a single point calibration then it is advised that you periodically check the electrode by testing in vinegar or orange juice. Because they are acidic they should have a reading less than pH 4. By seeing the reading decrease you will be confident that your probe is not broken.

It is very important to know that pH electrodes do not last forever. Typically they will last for 1-2 years depending on their use. A meter might still read outside of this time frame but the accuracy may decline. Depending on how close you want to be to the actual reading will dictate how often you should change the probe.
